Why This Book Was Written
I decided to write this book because I believe the world is in deep shit…and every time we drive our cars, cook our meals, heat our homes, cool our homes, or turn on a light bulb, we get in deeper. It didn’t have to be that way, but that’s the way it is. We could have “weaned” our way off oil decades ago, but special interests, particularly our government and the major oil companies, stood in the way…and now their “chickens have come home to roost!” Almost everything that’s wrong in the world today…everything from air pollution to the war on terror to global warming, can be traced to the “brainwashing” and misinformation that we’ve had rammed down our collective throats and blasted into our ears for the last 50 years. It is my hope that when you’ve finished this book, you’ll fully understand the dangers the world is now facing and the steps we must take to defeat those dangers.
I am not a scientist and I have no fancy initials after my name. I’m just an interested guy who has, for most of his adult life, studied the subject of nuclear power from a logical, common sense point of view and now believes his children and grandchildren can one day live in a better and safer world.
If you insist on a more technological and scientific defense of nuclear power, I have some excellent recommendations for you at the end of the book. My approach to this subject is entirely different. This book contains many of the facts and figures regarding nuclear power and the hundreds of nuclear power plants now operating that most of you have never had the opportunity to see before. I believe that the track record, the pros and cons, the lies, truths and distortions regarding nuclear power are the really important facts that the majority of us must begin to understand.
This book is written for all of you who are confused and worried about nuclear power. My goal (and purpose) is that you will believe, as I now do, that nuclear power will be history’s best example of “They shall beat their swords into plowshares!” (Micah 4:3.)
That is exactly what President Dwight Eisenhower meant when he challenged the world at his famous “Atoms for Peace” address before the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 8, 1953 when he proposed an International Atomic Energy Agency. His words then are worth repeating now:
“The more important responsibility of this Atomic Energy Agency would be to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine, and other peaceful activities. A special purpose would be to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world. Thus the contributing powers would be dedicating some of their strength to serve the needs rather than the fears of mankind. The United States would be more than willing – it would be proud to take up, with others principally involved, the development of plans whereby such peaceful use of atomic energy would be expedited.”
What was true more than 50 years ago is even truer TODAY!
For all these many years we have been bombarded with the “gobbledygook,” lies, myths, exaggerations, misrepresentations, brain washing and all kinds of disgraceful scare tactics concerning nuclear power. It’s time that we were bombarded with the TRUTH! Well….BOMBS AWAY ! !
Every time I hear that there’s going to be “rolling blackouts” because too many people are using their air conditioners, I get furious. In fact, when it’s suggested that we conserve our energy by not using our appliances at so-called “peak hours,” I have to resist the urge to run around the house turning on everything electrical I can find. But that would be a pretty stupid way to give the finger to the petroleum industry and their Arab buddies, and it wouldn’t accomplish a damn thing. “Tilting at windmills” never does.
WE SHOULD NEVER AGAIN HAVE TO BE TOLD TO CONSERVE ENERGY ANY MORE THAN WE SHOULD HAVE TO BE TOLD TO CONSERVE THE AIR WE BREATHE !
Every time I hear that people in the world are starving because of severe drought that prevents farmers from feeding and irrigating their crops, I get furious.
THERE SHOULD NEVER AGAIN BE A SHORTAGE OF FRESH, POTABLE AND IRRAGATEABLE WATER WHEN THREE FOURTHS OF OUR EARTH IS COVERED WITH WATER !
Every time I hear that the price of crude oil has gone up again and the price for gasoline at the pump has gone up with it, I get furious.
THERE SHOULD NEVER AGAIN BE A REASON FOR OUR CARS, TRUCKS, BUSES, TRAINS, SHIPS AND PLANES TO DEPEND ON OR BE REQUIRED TO USE ANY FOSSIL FUEL PRODUCT !
My goal in writing this book is that when you have finished reading it, you’ll understand that we are all victims of a five-decade campaign of lies, distortions and scare tactics unequaled in our nation’s history. We have at our IMMEDIATE (and that means NOW!) disposal the science and technology to end power shortages, fuel shortages, drought, hunger, poverty and accomplish all the goals listed in my “TEN GOOD REASONS WHY” at the end of the book (don’t go there yet…I have a few more bombs to drop.)
Simply put, the answer to all of this lies in CLEAN, SAFE, NUCLEAR POWER! It has been estimated that unless we replace ALL of our fossil fuel burning more than twenty million people, worldwide, could die in this century from air pollution alone. Those who do survive will live in a world where acid rain will continue to destroy our lakes, rivers, streams and forests. And if the dire predictions of global warming are true a lot of people, including many of our children and grandchildren, may never live to see the twenty-second century.
ALL OF THIS CAN BE PREVENTED NOW WITH NUCLEAR POWER…
…AND ONLY WITH NUCLEAR POWER ! !
